A friend of mine asked me this question some days back and I have been thinking about it ever since. The question went something like this -
What according to you is the all time best love story?? (and I don't mean personal accounts...I mean love stories from novels and movies...)
And though I have been thinking about this for sometime... I can't seem to make up my mind.
Some of my friends have some definite answers though...
Mojo says that it is "Love Story" and "Robibar".
According to Scorpionragz it most definitely is "Gift of the Magi". ( I somewhat agree with this.)
H says that he thinks it should be the movie "Pretty Woman".
And according to P it is (once again) "Love Story".
And so to everyone reading this post (intentionally or unintentionally) please take a few moments and answer this question of mine....
p.s. And this post is not because......(according to the greetings card companies) ..... 'love is in the air' nowadays....it is just a question I meant to ask people for sometime now.

lorna doone? gone with the wind?
i've an exam to sit for on 14th.

ohkay, call me manic depressive and negative-aura personality and all that. but i stick to wuthering heights. oh, and add the count of monte cristo to that.
and i also stick out a tiny hand to second srin. shucks, shucks, shucks. cholchhe na, cholbey na.
Love story is so over-rated.Eeesh.
love story sucks and my spirallera friend has stolen my first choice of lorna doone (If the gang remembers, I mooted this one)
But then, I would have say its the Prisoner of Zenda. In Victorian times, in times of strict etiqette, this was the first romance novel that the adolescent was introduced to in due course of learning.
uh, Sam Vimes and Lady Sybil? Carrot and Angua? Practically any love angle from Pratchett? ok, that was personal very biased opinion but yeah, tough question.
I loved Gone With The Wind, hated Scarlett; so obviously more than Rhett and Scarlett's love the interest of the book lies in the pity of war, which is what I once wrote a post on, here
I don't know, there are just too many books with beautiful love stories, I find it very difficult to pick any one,. But one of the most evocative books about love I've ever read *has* to be Lewis Carroll's Sylvie and Bruno. Then again, no one is going to agree to this one.
uh, above comment when I wrote I hate Scarlett, I meant A. Ripley's sequel to Gone With The Wind, not the character; sorry forgot to italicize :D
SPIRAL - haven't read 'lorna doone'. so can't actually comment. but i was thinking of 'gone with the wind' myself...
SRIN - no...it doesn't suck. it is just a teeny weeny bit overrated.
MANDY - well...i don't know about them being the all time greatest love stories...but one thing i can surely say...these 2 books rock!!! absolutely!!!
LIVING ON VIDEO - no...not much. but (as i said before) just a teeny weeny bit overrated.
ANC - well....prisoner of zenda rocks too!! and i think i do remember u being the first person to suggest lorna doone....
BABELFISH -well....i am afraid that i haven't read any of the books that u mention except 'gone with the wind' and 'scarlett'...so i can't really comment.
p.s. why is it that unrequited love stories always get more importance and prominence in such lists???
my favourite love story of all times..does it have to be english ???? i would say " Kanu kohe rai" and maybe "Hashi-Kanna"...
love story is the only "real" romantic novel I ever read...but it was too... "bold & the beautiful" for my taste. Read Pride and PRejudice (coz some chick forced me to).. but not sure that's a love story though... didn't like it... it would most likely be a teen chick flick starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston if it had been made today.
The concept of love in Wuthering heights has probably appealed to me the most... as far as books go... yeah... wuthering heights... although that's not a love story in the true sense...
I movies... definitely Dr. Zhivago ... Awesome... especially the last scene where he tries to call to Lara from the tram but just can't get to her... wow...
Casablanca was pretty awesome too...
Actually this new movie... "walk the line" has a really nicely done love story in it... liked that a lot.
just read the other comments... a Terry Pratcher as the all time greatest love story??? ok... if you say so..
Although I must agree on gone with the wind.. didn't read scarlett... but GWTW was overly long and ultimately quite directionless... maybe I just didn't get it... and the love story in it was pretty lousy too... probably the lousiest thing about it... the whole will-they won't-they thing...
Thing is... chicks find completely different romantic than guys...
Actually.. now that I think about it... the love story in books that probably ever moved me the most was Hunchback of Notre Dame... I'm so juvenile....

EREBUS - very very sorry to say that i haven't seen 'dr zhivago'. but i certainly am trying to read it for quite sometime. and yes...'hunchback of notre dame' was very very moving. and PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT say that rhett n scarlett's love story was the lousiest part in 'gone with the wind'. that is utter blasphemy. that 'really' is...
